As I prepped for my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, I was seeking healthy, lightened-up comfort food. Enter the tool I needed to complete my vegan potatoes au gratin: the OXO Good Grips Complete Grate & Slice Set. I’m a little afraid of slicers because I know there is a high propensity for cutting yourself, but this set gave me confidence with its no-slip grip and easy-to-use design.

The set has four options: medium and course graters, a julienne slicer and a regular slicer. It provides a secure, comfortable plastic grip for safety plus non-slip feet at the base to keep the container steady while in use. It’s also dishwasher-safe.

I used the julienne slicer because I haven’t had a way to julienne my veggies before, and the OXO product worked very well. The blades are sharp but the rubber handle has spikes in the bottom to attach securely to the food, which made me feel comfortable using it. I liked that it created such a consistent slice. When I was slicing my potatoes, I found it quick, clean and easy to use with minimal assembly.  Because it comes in a self-contained plastic vessel, I could shred directly into it to minimize messes, which is perfect when you’re tackling a big dinner or holiday meal.

The four grate/slice blades are easy to remove and clip in for use and then pop into the dishwasher for cleaning. My cupboards are crowded, so it’s important to me to have tools that are compact and streamlined. This set is small and self-contained, so I can easily stick it on a shelf with minimal needed space. I particularly enjoyed the tool’s colors — when in its container, there is a rainbow of hues that make it bright and cheery-looking. It would be a fun gift for anyone who loves cooking.

I loved the OXO set — this tool makes julienning veggies or grating root vegetables, cheese, cabbage, garlic or chocolate easy, safe and consistent. If you have a client looking for some simple tools to get them cooking more at home, this would be a wonderful suggestion for an affordable option that may empower them to have fun prepping their own food.
