Registered dietitian nutritionists are in a field where they get the remarkable opportunity to influence current and future generations of dietitians as well as consumers’ views on food.

Creating sustainable eating patterns for clients and collaborating with current and future dietitians are important skills. And by taking advantage of opportunities to serve, dietitians can help create healthier communities.

Current Dietitians

Each dietitian has a unique nutrition philosophy and this diversity creates opportunity. Take the time to learn from colleagues and dietitians around the world. Dietetic practice groups do a great job of giving dietitians the chance to learn from one another. Use these groups to reach out to one another, network and learn from others in the field.

Future Dietitians

Become a preceptor to learn from and help develop the upcoming generation of RDNs. Dietetic interns have tremendous value and can bring innovative ideas to the table. Take the time to understand what your students value and what they want to learn and help them reach those ambitions. You will help create a generation of RDNs with diverse skill sets.

Working with Clients

It takes a lot of courage to make the decision to change your eating habits. However, most clients are expecting a meal plan or a textbook on what to eat but we can serve them by elevating their experience and doing more than they expect by:

  • Building trust
  • Accommodating their needs that fit their lifestyle
  • Using active listening

Rather than judging by appearance or telling them everything wrong with fad diets, put yourself in their shoes and try to understand where your client is coming from and help them come up with reasonable and realistic goals that address their needs.

Remember

This fulfilling field gives us the opportunity to serve: dietitians, dietetic interns, and all of those looking for encouragement and sustainable results. Take the time to listen and build trust in order to create a diverse, healthy and supportive community.Dietitians Who Serve -
