There are loads of articles that provide tips and tricks to land a dietetic internship, but what about once you get accepted? How can you have a successful internship? When I landed mine, a flood of emotions came over me. I suddenly thought to myself, “How in the world am I going make it through this?” In search of answers, I desperately wondered how to be a successful dietetic intern and make the most of my experience. Now, being more than halfway done with my internship, I would love to share with you what I have learned along the way.
Stop Worrying
It’s easy to let worries consume your thoughts. In the months leading up to your first day, don’t let the “what ifs” consume you. Know that you landed an internship for a reason and you are qualified! Don’t let the list of projects and responsibilities scare you — it always seems impossible, until it has been done.
Try Your Best
Give everything, even the small tasks, all that you have. You must direct 100 percent of your time and effort into the responsibilities and tasks asked of you. A dietetic internship is by no means easy or something that will take minimal effort to complete. You will make mistakes and struggle at times, but putting in the effort now will set you up for success in your future career.
Keep a Positive Attitude
Remaining positive throughout your internship is crucial to your success. Yes, on top of long days of work you may have many projects and presentations to prepare, adding more hours to your schedule. But remember how lucky you are to be in this position. You’re in a place many students strive to be in every year. A positive mindset that radiates through your interactions and communication is key to building strong rapport with preceptors and provides you an advantage in networking opportunities.
