Lynne R Nachtrieb: Holistic Health in Africa

Lynne R Nachtrieb, RD, is a native Californian who works at Mission Hospital, primarily on the Oncology, Medical, Surgical floors. She has been a clinical dietitian for eight years and just became a Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition, which gives her the ability to provide nutritional counseling for those undergoing treatment as well as for cancer survivors and those interested in cancer prevention.

In 2010, she traveled to Sierra Leone, Africa, with Children of the Nations, an organization that provides holistic care to orphaned and destitute infants and children. While there, she taught some basic nutrition to a group of older local women, called Health Animators, who advocate for healthier communities by addressing “issues affecting health and poverty such as hygiene, clean water and superstitions.”

When asked why she became an RD, Nachtrieb says, “I am fascinated by human physiology, biochemistry and the impact of nutrition on health. I feel very fulfilled by my choice of career. In addition, since nutrition is such a dynamic field I am involved in lifelong learning and can share it with others, for their benefit, in the many varied opportunities with which I am presented…I hope to inspire others to volunteer and make a difference in people's lives.”
